Cow in Church

Sunday

Today we all piled into two taxis to go to the Deliverance Church, its at the same location as the Purpose Driven School. We fit 9 people into a TINY 5 person car, I think it was a new record (: that’s what Dan, the driver, told us. I’ve come to realize that Chris and Steve know EVERYONE in Kitale. The cab drivers, the boda-boda drivers (bike drivers with seats on the back to ride people around), the shop owners, the street children, all the pastors, store managers, and just all the families in town. They have been here so many times and give so much to the people of Kitale. They are LOVED by everyone.

At church Steve preached with a translator, Swahili is such a cool language, im learning a lot from the kids. Today I learned a whole bunch of useful sayings and I can count to 29 and I can sing a worship song (:

There is a woman in the church, Selena, whose husband passed away last week, he worked at the church. As a gift, we donated a cow to her and her children, but not only did we give it to her, but we brought it into the service and on stage only to have it pee right in front of everyone. Hahaha it was hilarious, ive never seen a cow in church before….they called it a Holy Cow (:

After church we came back to the compound with about 20 of the students from the Purpose Driven School for lunch. They call one group of the students the Mercy Girls. These kids ranged from kindergarten age to sophomores in high school. They say “class 1-8” and then they move onto highschool or “form 1-4” before they go on to a university, if they can.

cecilia (:

I had SO much fun talking with and hanging out with the kids, they are so full of energy. Hearing all of their stories left me speechless, learning that these kids live on the streets with absolutely nothing, and no parents. Many of them were taken in, or enslaved, by an evil guy named Peter who made them work and who totally abused them. The Purpose Driven Program was able to take them in and give them a home, food, an education, and just love and support that they needed.

They are so happy now and so full of life. We had a MAJOR dance party and listened to them sing and perform some poems. These kids love Jesus so much it shows in their smiles and in their attitudes. It gave me such a fresh perspective.

Emanuel. He took most of the pics on my camera haha

We just hung out with them all day until they left and then we were able to relax. Im loving the rest of the team, they are so awesome. I know that im going to have an amazing time getting to know them, and I know I will always be entertained.

  1. Brittany, I'm so glad you are in Kitale, and made it safe and sound. I know what you mean about the driving, we were so scared at first. Felt like a roller coaster ride and Indiana Jones rolled into one. We will be praying for you as you learn and grow in this new culture. Love and hugs to all those precious kids. Love, Kerry Nelson
